Picking the right dress is not always an easy task. We come in different shapes and sizes and sometimes finding the right dress for our body shape is a challenge. But this obstacle can overcome when we apply some fashion tricks and play around with accessories and jewellery. Sometimes when we look at a store front’s mannequin we fall in love in a dress, but when we try it doesn’t fit us as well as we expected it.
But this fact doesn’t mean that we are disproportionate or out of shape. It means this is just not the right dress for us because everyone has a unique body. No matter what type our body is, the right dress will make us stunning. We just have to find the suitable dress that is flattering to our body and enhances our most favourite parts to achieve a balanced look.
Determining our body type is important step for making the right choice of a dress.
Let’s check out the different body types and explain which dresses are suitable for them:
Characteristic features of this body are slim limbs but wide and developed shoulders. This type is described as the heaviest of all body types. Most of the body’s weight is in the midsection and the chest, which creates the effect of a bigger bust and a stomach.
The legs are slim in comparison to the top bottom of the body. This body shape doesn’t have a well-defined waistline below the midsection which makes it look rounded.
The best dresses for this type direct the focus from the midsection to other body parts. The detailing of the clothes should be placed on the top bottom and the lower third of the body.
The most suitable dresses for this body type are dresses with slight V-necks or elegant nightout dresses with deep V-necks that bring the attention to the bust and neck area. They make the torso visibly elongated.
Dresses with empire cut, A-line design or 3/4th sleeves are also suitable for an apple-shaped body. Dresses with eye-catching prints look flattering. They can be combined with jackets with a curious print too to direct the focus on the top bottom. Monochrome and dark colors should be preferred.
Wearing long sleeves, flared pants skinny or straight leg pants is also recommended. The bottoms of the tops should end just below midriff. You should better choose tops that have a draping design over the curves of the body and flared bottoms. Dresses and belts that pinch at the waist should be avoided.
The heaviest part of this body type is the bottom part. The butt, hips or thighs are larger than the bust and the top body part. Dressing the pear-shaped body is simple. You just have to bring the focus on the top part of the body as much as you can. Another goal here is to make the buttocks and hips slimmer in order to balance the top with the bottom.
The best dresses for this body type are A-line dresses, dresses with sweatheart, V or deep V-necks, scoop or boat necks and dresses with ruffled or patterned tops. Because they divert the attention to the top of the body.
Wearing a bra that enlarges visibly the bust is also a good idea. Slightly flared or straight design dresses are also recommended. We should avoid dresses that are too tight and enhance the curves. It’s recommended to wear black shade solid colors for our lower half and bright colors of a lighter shades for our top half.
If you have this body type you may want to enhance the curves nature gave you. Your body is well-balanced and the only thing left for you is to enhance your natural curves. The best dresses for you should follow your body’s outline. Our goal should be to bring the focus on the middle of our body and avoid shapeless and baggy clothes that make our figure look somehow “boxy”.
Dresses with plunge V-necks, sweetheart necklines are suitable for this body type and look very flattering as they accentuate your upper body. Tailored dresses look amazing on hourglass bodies. We can enhance our waistline by wearing statement belts and dresses that pinch at the waist.
Avoid dresses with necklines that are too deep. Choose belts that go below the belly button or below our natural waistline. Body-hugging or A-line dresses are also perfect for this body type. Dresses that are loose on the top or bottom part also look amazing on a hourglass shape body.
This body type is long, thin and somehow boyish in shape and doesn’t have much curves. It goes in one straight line from the shoulders to the hips. Our goal here is to create a balanced silhouette and the illusion of a curvy body and concentrate on the legs and the arms. Dresses that are pinched at the waist are a great choice.
Wearing a belt with your dress ca also accentuate your waist. We can add volume and femininity to our body by adding ruffles, frills and layers. Ruffled or pleated tops are your best friend.
Don’t be afraid to pick dresses with decorations at the bust area and layered dresses. Avoid dresses that are too baggy and pick up mini skirts instead. A-line, strapless, sleeveless and sweetheart necks are a good idea for a rectangular body type. Add peplum dresses to your wardrobe too.
This body type is the most athletic-looking of all. The shoulders are more wide than the hips. If we have such a body type, we need to accentuate our hips and balance them with our shoulders. Dresses with inverted V-look and such with V-neck lines make our shoulders look more narrow.
Since our shoulders are the broadest body part, pencil cut skirts are a good option for us. Avoid too much layering or detailing to your body. Save the colorful patterns, ruffles or layers to the bottom half of our body. The upper part of a dress should be as minimalistic as possible.
People with this body shape have narrow hips and shoulders, small bust, flat bottom. They have also small waist or lack a well-defined waist at all. To achieve visual balance in our body we need to create curvy lines around the bust and hips area to have the illusion of a defined waistline.
Layering is the best way to shorten the length of long top half. The best dresses for us are those which create the illusion of roundness to our leg line, sleeve and necklines.
Opt for dresses with high or low waisted designs. Choose dresses with broad shoulders, pleats and pockets that accentuate the waistline and combine them with unstructured jackets that drape to the waist. Other suitable dresses are wrap dresses, empire line dresses and such with princess line with curved darts and details.
Avoid figure-hugging clothes, long straightforward lines, dropped waistlines in dresses and also double breasted jackets, shirts and tops with square neck lines Dresses with bulky or heavy structures aren’t suitable for your body shape too.
