Pregnancy is one of the best moments in every woman’s life. As our body changes, we should change our clothing size too and a little bit. But it’s possible to be fashionable and achieve feminine elegance during your pregnancy period. The fact that you are pregnant doesn’t mean that you should wear only baggy sweatpants and shapeless tunics. Pregnancy should not be an obstacle for our desire to follow fashion trends and look stunning everywhere we go. But it’s not impossible to keep up a fashionable and elegant look while being pregnant.
There are a few rules of how to keep in fashion while pregnant:
Be faithful to your own fashion style
The fact that you are pregnant doesn’t mean you have to feel unattractive and wear boring and tent-like clothes that hide your body. Pregnant women can be fashionable too and as elegant as non-pregnant women. They can accentuate their femininity by focusing on the right body parts.
You shouldn’t give up on your own personal style at all because you are pregnant. You can still stick to it by choosing the right clothes of the design you want by just adding a few adjustments in order to keep the necessary level of comfort.
Make wise shopping choices
When you are pregnant you should dress differently depending on what stage of the pregnancy you are. One of the key things to pay attention to is the fact that your body changes quickly and your clothing size will vary from month to month. That is why you should not buy new clothing pieces often and do your shopping sparingly. In week 14 you will look different than week 9.
Choose the right size for your current body state. Buy large clothes only when you need to and your bump is showing. At this stage you may want to buy clothes designed for maternity. This type of clothing is designed to offer us a maximum level of comfort and it’s different than regular clothing.
During the pregnancy we may not want to wear baggy unattractive clothes but instead we want to bring the focus on the right place and cover the visible bump in order to achieve a balanced body shape.
It’s also more expensive than standard clothing and price can be an issue. In this case you can opt for going to a thrift store.
Pick up the right clothes
Don’t just choose clothes of bigger size since after the pregnancy it’s very likely you may not want to wear them. While you can wear regular clothing during the first 3 months, maternity wear is way better than regular clothing so you should better pick it out.
Comfy bras and clothes with elastic bands are your best friend. When it comes to jeans, pick up such with bootcut design and of stretchable fabrics. Avoid tops that are billowy but pick up such clothes that are draping gracefully over your body but still have shape.
Tunics are a great choice for pregnant women. As they are fitted across the shoulders and arms and fall loosely over the body’s midsection.
V-neck or scoop neck shirts are ideal for pregnancy because they bring the focus on the neckline instead of our bottom part. Wraps, high-waisted skirts, A-Line skirts, pencil skirts, sarongs – all perfect options to wear during pregnancy.
Avoid buying unstylish things that you don’t want to look at years after if you are going to lose the excess weight after the pregnancy.
There are a few general rules to follow when it comes to pregnancy. Comfort should be our top goal and style comes. If we want our outfit to be well-put we should pick up clothes according to our body type.
Dress for your pregnancy type
Another key thing when choosing clothes during pregnancy is to know your body type. For example some women have high pregnancies and some women carry the baby lower and you should pay attention to this factor.
If your pregnancy is low (you carry your baby low), you need clothing that is soft on the waistline as it will provide you with comfort. Such clothing includes shirts that end below the bump.
If you carry your baby high, you should create some line in your clothing that stands between the bump and your breasts. You can get it by adding a high belt or a tie. It’s recommended to wear clothing that is flexible at the midsection.
Ways to dress during every pregnancy stage
The first trimester
During this period we can still wear regular clothing. Most women want to hide their first pregnancy sings during the first three months. Avoid clothing that is too clingy or tight-fitting. Pick up such clothing that is flowy over the belly, the hips and the thighs.
Stick to soft knits, wrap shirts, A-line skirts, frocks, empire design tops. Blousons are ideal type of clothing for pregnancy because they end in a fitted waistband but offer some bagginess above the band. The baggy structure of the blouson offers comfort while the fitted waistband adds a tailored femininity to the look.
The second trimester
During this stage you should not buy new clothes too often. You need just a small number of clothing pieces that are designed for maternity and can grow with you. Clothes with some detailing such as wraps, ruching, buttons, tie backs, gathering at the sides.
This will help you adjust the size of the clothing at every stage and avoid the need of buying new clothes you may not wear twice. This detailing not only gives you convenience but also makes your look more feminine and chic.
At this stage of the pregnancy we are not able to hide it any more and maximum comfort should be our top priority. We should ditch constricting belts and waist bands.
What we can do is pick up loose-fitting T-shirts or soft jersey knits that are trendy and maternity pants that fits you well. Accessorize with belts, jackets with interesting pattern, scarves, jewellery like necklaces to achieve a tailored look.
Invest in stretchy bands. They can be worn in combination with our jeans and at the top of the waistband which we are no longer able to zip or button. They keep the pants from falling down and are very convenient.
Stretchy bands are ideal for the earlier stages of our pregnancy. They have a smoothing effect and that is why they are fully invisible when worn under the clothes. If you don’t want to use stretchy bands you can use a rubber band or safety pin instead to keep the pants in place.
Another suitable clothing staple for this stage are leggings. Stay away from stiff fabrics, buttons, zippers and pick up loose-fitting designs instead. It’s good to avoid clothes made of lycra and satin as well.
Yoga pants are great for pregnant women as they are made from stretchable fabrics. Soft knits are also a preferable option as they are super comfortable and easy for washing.
Last but not least, don’t forget to pick up the right shoes. They should offer comfortable wear and stability. You should give up the high heels for a while as wearing them at this stage can create back pain. Comfortable flats or boots, wedges, flip flops are all perfect options.
